ACPBA TO HOST DRUMMING WORKSHOP Wednesday, March 23, 2005

Drum Major and Side Drum Workshop

The ACPBA will be hosting workshops on April 23, 2005 at the Agri-Tech Park, 90 Research Drive, Truro, NS. Each workshop will provide instruction in a variety of areas including technique, showmanship and participation with other band sections.

Ray Halliday – Drum Major Instructor - Ray was a member of the winning Grade 2 drum section of the St. Laurent/Clan Sutherland Pipe Band from Montreal at the North American Championships, Maxville in 1975 and 1976. He has won drum major championships including the Canadian Inter-provincial Champion, Canadian Open Champion, twice as International Champion and is a 6 time North American Champion (1971, 1974-78). Today Ray is the lead drummer with Old Scotia Pipes and Drums, Great Village, NS.

Ray Halliday will include in his workshop Mace drill, signaling and flourishing and will be of benefit to Drum Majors of all levels. Participants must wear a kilt and take full dress for marching and dress and deportment.

Matt Carter – Side Drum Instructor - A long time member of the Fredericton Society of Saint Andrew Pipe Band, Matt started drumming with the band in 1984 and has been the band's lead drummer since 1994. As a solo competitor, he has won nearly ever solo drumming prize at every grade level in Atlantic Canada. An active teacher in the Fredericton area, Matt not only teaches pipe band drumming but regularly works with jazz and rock drummers interested in improving their rudiment skill and knowledge.

Currently Matt is working on a book of exercises for players of all grade levels and abilities which he hopes to have published by the end of the year. Matt will be focusing his workshop for students playing in lower-grade bands. The major topics will include rudiment development, playing technique and corps playing.
