PIOBAIREACHD SOCIETY SET TUNES FOR 2005

The Piobaireachd Society recommends the following lists of set tunes for competition in 2005.

A. SENIOR COMPETITION

  1. Nameless (cherede darievea) [Bk. 8 & K]
  2. Mrs MacLeod of Tallisker's Salute [Bk. 11]
  3. Beinn a' Ghriain* [Bk. 4]
  4. The Earl of Ross's March¹ [Bk 10]
  5. The Lament for the Earl of Antrim [Bk 3 & K]
  6. The Lament for the Union²* [Bk 6& K]
¹ -- The Earl of Ross's March- Bk 10- an additional bar of two Crunluath beats on low A to be played after bar 3 of each line of the Crunluath doubling.

² -- The Lament for the Union -- an alternative form of the variations can be found in an article by R.D.Cannon Piping Times Volume 50 No.8 (May 1988). Copies of these variations can be obtained from the Hon. Secretary, address as below.

* For the purpose of these competitions, the tunes marked * should be played with a crunluath a mach variation.

Competitors are required to submit four (4) tunes from the above list, one of which they will be required to play.

B. GOLD MEDAL COMPETITION

  1. MacDonald of Kinlochmoidart's Lament, No. 2* [Bk 6]
  2. Lament for Captain MacDougall [Bk 6 & K]
  3. MacLeod of MacLeod's Lament [Bk 15 & K]
  4. The Young Laird of Dungallon's Salute* [Bk 10]
  5. Clan Ranald's Salute* [Bk 7 & K]
  6. The Gathering of the MacNabs* [Bk 5 & K]
* For the purpose of these competitions, the tunes marked * should be played with a crunluath a mach variation.

Competitors are required to submit four (4) tunes from the above list, one of which they will be required to play.

C. SILVER MEDAL COMPETITION

  1. The Boat Tune [Bk 13]
  2. Lady Doyle's Salute [K]
  3. March for a Beginner [K]
  4. Lament for the Little Supper [Bk 8 & K]
  5. Cluny MacPherson's Salute [Bk 4]
  6. The Mackay's Short Tune [Bk 8]
Competitors are required to submit four (4) tunes from the above list, one of which they will be required to play.

Tunes marked BK refers to the volume of the Piobaireachd Society's Collection of Piobaireachd. Tunes marked "K" will be found in the Kilberry Book of Ceol Mor.

Competitors are not restricted to the settings or the styles in the books mentioned above, and any other setting or style may be played, providing that the judges may take into consideration, the authenticity and merits of such setting or style.

Competitors are advised to give advance notice to the judges should they intend to play alternatives to those contained in the Kilberry Book or in staff notation in the Society's Collection.

Altogether different tunes known by the same or similar names will not be accepted as alternatives.

This announcement is made by the Piobaireachd Society to ensure earliest publication. It is without prejudice to any arrangements made by either the Argyllshire Gathering or the Northern Meeting.
